William Ferguson Reid grew up next door to the banker and community leader Maggie Lena Walker. Inspired by her work, Dr. Reid began registering voters in the 1950s—no easy task in the days of poll taxes. In 1967 Dr. Reid, a physician, became the first African American elected to the Virginia General Assembly in the 20th century.
