One of the most significant gatherings for civil rights occurred at Airlie Center. In February 1988, more than 150 leaders of the LGBTQ community met in a War Conference at Airlie to raise awareness and develop strategies to achieve equal rights under the law. Key initiatives from the conference included national media campaigns, a nation-wide emergency response network, annual conferences, and the establishment of National Coming Out Day.
