The brilliant and iconoclastic Reverend Vernon Johns, “Father of the Civil Rights Movement,” was one of the most well-known religious leaders of the early 20th century. His fiery social gospel and unconventional antics inspired future generations of civil rights activists, including the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who succeeded Johns as pastor of Montgomery, Alabama’s Dexter Avenue Baptist Church; and his own niece, Barbara Johns, who at age 16, led the 1951 Moton Student Strike in their hometown of Farmville, Va.
