Few churches can lay claim to helping spark a revolution. But it was at St. John’s Church in Richmond where fiery patriot Patrick Henry gave his famous “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death” speech on March 23, 1775. Henry sought to sway delegates attending the Second Virginia Convention, including George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, of the need for military preparedness against the British. Although no official record of the speech was recorded, none forgot his dramatic closing line, which helped push Virginia toward the American Revolution.
