The horse could run. Foaled at Christopher T. Chenery’s Meadow Stable, near Doswell, Secretariat grew up to be one of the greatest racehorses of all time. Best known for winning the 1973 Triple Crown—the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes—Secretariat was the first horse to accomplish that feat in twenty-five years and one of only twelve to do so. Secretariat won $1.3 million in prize money and sired a number of prize-winning foals before his death in 1989.
