“Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death!” were the words reportedly spoken by fiery Virginia patriot Patrick Henry at St. John’s Church early in the American Revolution. A brilliant orator and lawyer at Hanover County Courthouse, Henry developed his strongest criticisms of the Crown at his Scotchtown home. A leader during the Revolution, though he held no national office except in the Continental Congress, Henry was the first governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, a position he held five times. He fought against a strong central government before retiring to his Red Hill plantation.
