Norfolk State University
What became Norfolk State University was established in 1935 as the privately-funded Norfolk Unit of Virginia Union University. Under the guidance of leaders like Lyman Beecher Brooks the Norfolk campus grew, and by 1942 it had become the independent Norfolk Polytechnic College. Two years later, the General Assembly finally awarded funds to the school and it became the Norfolk Division of Virginia State College. The Norfolk Division awarded its first bachelor’s degrees in 1956 and was completely separated from Virginia State in 1969. Norfolk State reached university status in 1979.
