Lewis and Clark Expedition
Following the purchase of the Louisiana territory from France (1803), President Thomas Jefferson initiated a plan to explore America’s new western lands. He chose his personal secretary Meriwether Lewis to lead the expedition. Lewis, born and raised in Albemarle County, in turn solicited the help of fellow Virginian William Clark. Together the two collected a diverse Corps of Discovery that would make a two-year journey to the Pacific Ocean and back, documenting their observations and experiences in journals.
