The James River and Kanawha Company, a canal and turnpike network stretching from Richmond to the West Virginia-Kentucky border, built the covered Humpback Bridge in 1857 at a time when it connected a major thoroughfare. It is one of the few remaining covered bridges in the United States that was built higher in the middle than on either end, giving it the nickname “humpback.”
