Highland Historical Society
Housed in a classic Greek revival mansion, the Highland Historical Society is home to exhibits highlighting the history of the area. A film about an 1862 Civil War battle known as the Battle of McDowell recounts how it affected Stonewall Jackson’s Valley Campaign. The acclaimed 1921 silent film Tol’Able David was filmed in Highland County. The Staunton-to-Parkersburg Turnpike, completed in 1850, opened the way for renewed development, and commerce in the region. Highland County is best known for its mountains and an annual Maple Festival.
