In 1935 the largest moonshining investigation in Virginia history took place in Franklin County during the Great Moonshine Conspiracy Trial. The case drew national attention, as local and state officials were part of a nearly decade-long moonshining operation that produced more than a million gallons of moonshine during Prohibition. A 2012 film titled Lawless features the bootlegging Bondurant brothers. The Bondurant Brothers Distillery, still owned by a member of the Bondurant family serves legal “white whiskey” today and offers tours and tastings.
