Gillfield Baptist Church (Petersburg)
Gillfield Baptist Church, established in 1797, is the second oldest black congregation in Petersburg and one of the oldest in the country. It holds the oldest handwritten record book of any black church. Wyatt Tee Walker was pastor of the church during the early Civil Rights Movement and co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) with Martin Luther King Jr. The church made history once again in 1970, when it broke with tradition and elected seven women as deacons. A short walk away, stands the even older First Baptist Church, on Harrison Street, established in 1774.
