For American cuisine, a quiet crossroads in the Virginia Piedmont represents a culinary Eden. The granddaughter of Freetown’s emancipated founders, Edna Lewis celebrated the cooking of her childhood in her 1976 cookbook, The Taste of Country Cooking, which reclaimed Southern and African American cooking as a vibrant, innovative, and worldly gastronomy. Her seasonal, fresh approach—with her hometown’s culinary and natural rhythms as the backdrop—reached a nationwide audience decades before people uttered the term “farm-to-table.”
