Christiana Burdett Campbell
Experience Colonial Williamsburg’s shops, restaurants and reconstructed commercial buildings and a surprisingly female world emerges. Christiana Burdett Campbell, and Jane Vobe found a strong economic niche by running taverns that attracted high-profile Virginians such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. These women ran their enterprises with enslaved workers who were forced to cook, attend to guests and board horses. Thus, the story of the empowerment of two colonial women is shadowed by the story of slavery.
