Central State Hospital
With roots in the Freedmen’s Bureau, the Virginia General Assembly established the Central Lunatic Asylum (c. 1870) east of Richmond in Henrico County as the first mental health hospital for African Americans in Virginia. The asylum moved to Petersburg in 1885 and the name was changed to Central State Hospital in 1894. Desegregated following the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Central State is still in use today.
