Ann Burras arrived in 1608 as an indentured teenage maid for Mistress Forrest. They were the first two known English women at Jamestown. Two months later, almost certainly in the church that once stood on the grounds of today’s Historic Jamestowne, she married original settler John Laydon in likely the first such ceremony in Virginia. This strong young woman survived disease, a likely beating ordered by Governor Sir Thomas Dale, the Starving Time, and the Second Anglo-Powhatan War. By 1625 the Laydon family was living in Elizabeth City County.
